Lifestyle has a major impact on health. The synchronized approach to good health includes a balanced diet with optimal nutrition, exercise for fitness and weight loss or management, and the right supplement to support your personal good health goals.

From teachers, to doctors, parents and friends, everyone everywhere tells us that diet and exercise help us remain fit and fine. We can prevent many life-threatening diseases through balanced diet and regular exercise. Supplements or medicine should be kept as a last resort, even though they have an important role to play in good health. This means that we know the right things, but don’t always understand why they are all important together. Also, we need to break the bias against clubbing supplements with medicines used to recover from illness.

However, first, let us understand what is a balanced diet? Why should we exercise at all? Which supplements can we safely take regularly? All these questions naturally pop up in the mind. Let me offer you simple pointers to answer these bewildering concerns.

  • Balanced diet: In an era of carb, sugar, salt, fat and packaged food, balanced diet is often compromised. In urban areas especially, we start the day with toast and coffee and end it with pizza or pasta. Erratic or skipped meals, another big concern, can furthercause headaches, migraines and many other health problems. A clean diet can keep you energetic, increase the lifespan and quality of life. A balanced diet includeseating a variety of food in the right proportion, at the right time to achieve good health. A balanced diet includes five food groups- Cereals and grains; milk, milk products; meat, fish, nuts; vegetables and fruits; oil, fat, and sugar. Inclusion of this variety from each and every group makes a complete diet. A well-balanced diet can aid the natural weight loss process. Healthy diet reduces the risk of hypertension and cardiovascular diseases. More vegetables and fruits are rich in Vitamin C and fiber to fight heart ailments and help in weight loss. Vegetables and fruits are also rich in phytonutrients and antioxidants that fight debilitating diseases such as cancer, improve skin? and digestion by detoxifying the system.
  • Exercise: Only eating healthy does not help as you need to stay active and move those muscles if you want the oxygen and nutrients to reach every cell of your body. Our body has been designed to be physically active. It is not meant to stay inactive.Because growing technology has made life so much easier, we are becoming very sedentary. For many adults, it is challenging to even take 10,000 steps in an average day. Inactivity is a ‘silent killer’. It has been proved time and again that being physically active can result in a healthier and happier life. To be active, aim to get at least 150 minutes of weekly physical activity using a variety of activities. Exercise can help weight loss, which is root cause of many lifestyle diseases. Exercise improves muscle strength and bones. It enhances the immune system, fights cancer, improves insulin sensitivity and prevents type 2 Diabetes. Exercise is also the most under used antidepressant. An hour of walk in the nature, 15-minute floor exercise or a Zumba class can all release happiness-inducing hormones to uplift your mood. It greatly boosts confidence and self-esteem, resulting in good health.
  • Supplements: Supplements fill the gaps we miss in getting the right nutrients from food. Changing lifestyle and eating habits have made it challenging to ensure sufficient nutrients that are required to perform efficiently and lead a healthy life. It is becoming challenging to meet balanced diet requirements.
